Mercer Museum

Vicki and I also went to the Mercer Museum in Doylestown. It has six floors of all sorts of things. "The core of the Mercer Museum collection was conceived by its founder as an encyclopedic assemblage of pre-industrial American material culture. Established in 1897, it is now recognized as one of the most extensive collections of artifacts associated with pre-1850 American life-ways and technological history. Comprising nearly 40,000 objects, the museum is especially renowned for its collections of tools and artifacts associated with pre-industrial trades, crafts, agriculture and domestic work. While originating primarily in the Middle Atlantic region, these collections also include thousands of objects from New England, Appalachia and the Deep South."

I think it's a very unusual place inside and out.

It sounds like and interesting place. Given it's size, I can emagine the fatigue if one tried to see it all at once.

Imposing building. Interesting post. I would like to see what's inside.

That building looks absolutely Medieval. I wouldn't want to be the person in charge of cleaning windows! I was born and raised in Lancaster County, PA - I've lived in CO for 20 years now.

It sounds a bit like the origins of the Smithsonian institute. And it would be worth seeing for the building alone - it looks like a castle.

Sounds like a marvelous pre-industrial place.

very interesting looking building you have there? Where does the Mercer part come from?

The Mercer Museum is fabulous, although I have not been there for quite some time.. it is one of those places I want to visit again once we are back in PA. 48 hours from now, we will be on the road (hopefully with 9 hours or so of driving out of the way toward PA!) We will be living only about 15 miles from Doylestown. I am so looking forward to new photo ops, of the old familiar places, my photography has changed a great deal since I last lived in the area!

Good photo for today. Thanks for your comments on my site. I really like and respect Native American culture. The experience you had to observe a Hopi dance is very special. I too have been fortunate with being at the Hopi mesas and watching a dance. i really valued the experience.

It's an unusual place indeed. It looks a bit like one of our castles! It must be interesting to spend some time in the museum itself. Thanks for showing!
